All of my designs are based on traditional raranga whakairo. Sometimes I will use the whakapapa from a pattern and use that as the base then expand it out, change it or delete parts where it should change and let it continue in its own path uninterrupted. I find a lot of joy in discovering. I will often reflect on a legend and think about that story and do something that speaks about that.
The images below show previous works which have now sold and are provided to help you decide what you might want. Prices are indicative and are influenced not only by the size of the piece but also the complexity of the patterns and the width of the flax strips (the fineness of the weaving). We will agree on a price for your piece before I start work on it.
Kete whakairo are highly coloured and patterned and are for special occasions, or for adorning walls as art pieces. We view kete as vessels of wisdom or knowledge, so a gift of a kete represents more than just a bag. Kete whakairo hold a lot of information and history about the area they are made in. Patterns will talk about the area having abundant food, if the weaver lives by the sea, bush, river or mountain with lots of symbols or designs associated to that area. Or they will speak of the weaver's tribe.
