Tribal Images is the name given to works by Northland artist Charmaine Soljak
(Te Arawa).

My work encompasses:
Flax weaving
Sculpture
Painting

I use the ancient art form of raranga to create work that carries the mana of weaving and inspires people. I love the complexity of the patterns and the commitment it takes to the craft. I look at old pictures of weaving and am in awe of our tupuna and gratefully acknowledge my teachers and mentors that have passed this taonga to me.

I work mainly in flax (harakeke), harvesting from bushes that I’ve planted and nurtured in the pa harakeke (plantation). Before harvesting, I recite karakia to create the appropriate space to be taking this taonga from the whenua. sculptureThen harvest the material - harvesting from the bush and sitting on the whenua to process the korari, connecting to the land, sky and as I look out to sea. The harakeke is then split, softened, boiled and coloured.

Most of my works are created on a commission basis, although some can be viewed at galleries. If you are considering a piece for your home or business, please contact me to talk about options.
